Choreographing our first wedding dance – help!?
March 3, 2010
I am getting married in 4 months. My fiance and I have chosen a song (Feelin’ Good by Nina Simone) that is hard to slowdance to for our first dance. We origianlly planned on having someone choreograph a dance for us to go with the music, but our wedding budget is quickly going dry. I was thinking of getting a self-help dance video and trying to put together something myself. What type of dance would go well with a song that has a soulful, jazzy, sexy feel? I need some quick help. Thanks!!!!
I know our local parks and rec department has ballroom and swing dance classes for adults–and they’re not very expensive for a couple. Why don’t you look into something like that, rather than something ultra expensive like Arthur Murray? You can have fun with other couples, have fun with each other learning a new skill, and it won’t cost more than going out to dinner. I think they last 4-6 weeks too–1 or 2 nights a week. My husband and I have always thought about doing it…it looks like fun.

How to learn Formal (ballroom) dancing by a video for my wedding?
February 25, 2010
I cant afford dance classes, and my fiance wouldnt have the time to attend. What video would you recommed that is the best.. or even what style of dance would you recommed for like the father/daughter and the our first dance
It is very difficult ot learn how to ballroom dance from videos. You can learn steps and patterns from videos but beyond that, actually putting the steps together properly, frame, technique, etc, you need a coach. Even professional dancers still see coaches to make sure they are doing things correctly. I guess if you can only learn from video then International Standard videos would be the best. But I warn you that you probably will not get the results you want from watching videos. The dance that you do at your wedding would depend greatly on your personal style. My ex was a ballroom instructor and we had decided to do the tango just because it was our best dance, and a latin dance mix just for fun. I would say with your father, the waltz. For your first dance if you are not super comfortable with dancing, waltz again. Hope this is helpful.
