Marquees – the Perfect Alternative
February 2, 2010
When organising an event, whether it be a wedding, music concert or party, the first thing 90% of us will ask ourselves is where? Where would be the perfect venue for my event? Occasionally we already have a venue in mind, or the type of venue that the event would require, even so, I have always found it my duty to execute careful research and offer clients a range of suitable venues from which to make their choice.
So while I trawl through venue finding companies in search of the most suitable location, I always have the possibility of hiring a marquee in addition. Many event organisers look purely for beautiful buildings within their specific requirements, and only use venues for which they have an association with.
A marquee can turn even the most unattractive of venues into a location decent enough for any occasion. Traditionally marquees are used for weddings, where interior linings, decorations and lighting can give it a desirable and relaxed atmosphere perfectly suited for such a personal occasion.
Although it is nice to have such an important day of ones life staged in a historic, beautiful and famous building, marquees can provide the same environment and for a third of the price. In addition, marquees can be erected to a specific size and changed around to accommodate almost anything. There was a recent event at the University of Hertfordshire, where a stage was erected inside a marquee with a huge dance floor so students could party as if they were in a nightclub. The Beckhams’ pre-World Cup party was housed inside a huge marquee, indeed, so was the kitchen, cloak rooms, toilets and bars.
Marquees today are becoming more and more sophisticated, with a huge variety of walls to choose from, interiors specific to requirements, different flooring types, disabled access, and air conditioning, which is evidence that marquees are becoming buildings for themselves. Many marquee hire companies have realised this and offer an extensive range of additional services, like Piggotts (http://www.piggotts.co.uk/marquee-index.htm), who have been in the business for decades providing marquees for prestigious events such as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
So now when I am planning an event I always look through hundreds of venues based on the clients’ requirements, but also explain to them the benefits of considering using marquees to support a venue. They all believe it when they see it.
